Why do Mandevilla leaves turn yellow and fall off

You grow Mandevilla with yellow leaves and mass fall? In this article I share some of the most prominent causes of mandevilla leaf yellowing. The same was true for diplandenia.

Overwatering and lack of sunlight are the two most common reasons for yellowing leaves in mandevilla or dipladenia.

1. Overwatering or Underwatering

If your mandevilla starts to appear yellowing on lower lower leaves, old leaves. Then, these leaves can turn brown and fall off. Your plant may have received too much water.
In my garden, mandevilla leaves are easy turning yellowing after long rains (more than 2 days). Because, potted plants are always wet and lack sunlight.

To check this, you can pull mandevilla or dipladenia out of the pot and look at the roots. If the roots are brown and the potted soil is still very wet. An excessive amount of water causes mandevilla leaves to turn yellow

Solution:

Try to drain the water quickly from the pot. Does your mandevilla pot have holes in the bottom? It is better not to place a saucer under the pot, as the water can not be drained off. The Mandevilla or dipladenia does not like having wet feet.

If your hometown rains frequently, you should choose a pot with lots of holes in the bottom of the pot. The mandevilla medium soil needs to be more spongy and well-drained by mixing more perlite.

=> Another solution is to scatter a layer of hydro granules in the pot. This way, the roots are not in direct contact with the water (the saturation zone).

2. Lack of sunlight

Does your mandevilla have some yellow leaves in the center of the plant? This means that mandevilla may lack sunlight. As not enough sunlight reached the middle of the plant, the plant does not longer use these leaves for photosynthesis. Also, the leaves in the middle of the plant will stay humid for a longer period of time.

Why is that? Because the sunlight does not reach the middle of the plant, moisture does not evaporate as quick which heightens the chances of the fallen leaves to grow moldy. The growing of mold could be a danger for the plant.

Solution:

This is nothing to worry about. It is sensible to remove the leaves that have fallen off.

During autumn the sun shines less and the air becomes more humid. Or in the rainy season in countries with tropical monsoon climate (as Viet Nam, my country) from 5-10. This results in the mandevilla showing a bit more of a yellow colour as a whole.
